Fort Wayne Chapter of the American Sewing Guild will join sewing enthusiasts across the country to celebrate September as National Sewing Month, a month dedicated to the art, utility and passion for sewing. A highlight will be a daylong sew-in paying tribute to Sew a Jelly Roll Day, nationally held on the third Saturday of September. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 21 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Convoy, OH. Bring a jelly roll of strips of coordinating fabrics 2 ½-inches wide by 40-inches long, pattern, sewing machine and supplies. The cost is $20 and includes a hearty lunch. For questions about the event and to register, email the chapter at asgftwayne3@gmail.com.
National Sewing Month observance began in 1982 with a proclamation from President Ronald Reagan designating it “In recognition of the importance of home sewing to our Nation.” That importance was shown during the pandemic when both new and experienced sewists became frontline supporters creating masks and other protective equipment. As the need for PPE dropped away, the love of sewing – whether new or nurtured – inspired a resurgence in the art of sewing.
American Sewing Guild is a national organization made up of 130 chapters and over 1,000 neighborhood groups, creating a network of sewing friends with all levels of sewing experience. The Fort Wayne Chapter serves NE Indiana as well as the Van Wert, OH area and boasts several neighborhood groups each meeting monthly with a different focus, including quilting, garment sewing/fitting, machine embroidery, community service and more. A new group dedicated to owners and would-be owners of antique featherweight sewing machines is forming and will hold its first meeting in October. To find out more about this and the chapter, go to our chapter website at www.asgfortwayne.org and check out the national website at www.asg.org.
